Before I used to watch movies rarely, so I don't have much of experience here. Around the middle of 2024 I started watching films more often and now I track what I've seen in my Letterboxd profile.
Don't be too salty about my ratings though: I set ratings based purely on my interest during the film and I don't try to be a critic and actually evaluate how good or bad each film is. In fact none of the films I've ranked I consider as a bad one, it's just not all of them appeal to me. To be fair, I recognize that my perception of films may be actually strange and controversal, but who really cares. In some cases I have specific reasons why I don't like some films as many other people do, but again, it's about personal preferences, I don't try to be a judge.
The most repeated observation is that I'm not too keen on slow movies: mainly because I don't understand any deep meanings at all (perhaps I have some opposite version of apophenia at this point). For instance, when some certain film suddenly showed a scene with a unicorn I might not have realized or might simply forget that it was a dream. Later, when the main character noticed that his partner had left an origami figure in the shape of a unicorn, I understood that the partner was here before the main character, but I absolutely didn't get the sequence of events and it's meaning: the main character sees a unicorn in his dream → his partner makes a unicorn shaped figure → this is a hint that other people may know about the main character's dreams → this is a potential sign that main character may not be a human after all.
Another factor is that I don't watch movies in my native language, I prefer to watch with original voices and English subtitles. As a result, I often can't understand all 100% of the initial meaning of each sentence in conversations (in both literal/linguistic and "cultural" ways). Also, the perception of things in non-native language works oddly enough: even if you know exactly what a character is saying, you react less emotionally and don't take the words as strongly as you might if you were watching in your native language (but rarely it works in the opposite direction, I may laugh at a random joke just because it sounds and is perceived differently in another language).
